Amigos, directed by Rajendra Reddy, is a bold and experimental film that builds on the concept of doppelgangers. Kalyan Ram’s performance in multiple roles showcases his acting skills, including his portrayal of the self-centered monster, Bipin Roy, who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Although his characters share similarities with his role in Bhimbisara, Kalyan Ram plays each with ease and finesse. Brahmaji’s performance is also notable throughout the movie, while Ashika Ranganath makes a limited yet impactful appearance.
Despite its experimental nature, Amigos manages to entertain with action, comedy, and fan service. However, the rehashed song, ‘Enno ratrulu vastai…’ from Dharma Kshetram, does little to aid the script. Kalyan Ram’s stylish and menacing portrayal of Bipin stands out, and the plot becomes increasingly intriguing as Bipin’s past as an Indian Pablo Escobar is revealed layer by layer. The film’s latter part feels like a stretch, though, and could have been more engaging.
Music composer Ghibran’s background score and cinematographer Soundarajan’s work in stitching the three look-alikes together elevate the script. Supporting actors, including Saptagiri, Jayaprakash, Mathyu Vargees, Rajeev Pillai, and Chaitanya Krishna, play their parts well.
In summary, Amigos is an action thriller that works in parts due to Kalyan Ram’s acting prowess and presence. Although it is not a perfect film, it has enough to keep the viewer engaged.
