Puri Jagannadh’s much-hyped film “Liger” had either the potential to become a massive hit or a spectacular failure. Unfortunately, the film failed to offer anything novel beyond Vijay Deverakonda’s impressive physique. The story follows Liger (Vijay Deverakonda), a foul-mouthed MMA fighter raised by his single mother (Ramya Krishnan), who aspires to win the national championship. However, things take a different turn when Liger falls in love with a social media influencer named Tanya (Ananya Panday), who happens to be the sister of his nemesis Sanju (Vishu).
Despite being a sports drama, the film fails to focus on the sport, and the romantic subplot also falls short. Even the introduction of Liger’s childhood hero Mark Anderson (Mike Tyson) seems out of place. The characters lack intelligence and common sense, and the writing feels cringe-worthy at times. The film also fails to offer anything innovative or new, following the usual template of a sports drama mixed with commercial cinema. The songs are a misfit, and some of the fight scenes are also disappointing.
The only saving grace of the film is Vijay Deverakonda, who brings sincerity to his role, despite the one-toned character. Ramya Krishnan’s character is loud and Ananya Panday has a long way to go in terms of acting. The supporting cast is okay, with Getup Srinu being hilarious in some scenes. Mike Tyson’s much-hyped cameo is a let-down, and the ending is unsatisfactory.
In conclusion, “Liger” lacked focus, innovation, and satisfactory conclusion to any of its tracks. While Vijay Deverakonda deserved better, so did the audience.
