Thegimpu is a movie about a cop who strikes a deal with a group of goons planning to rob Your Bank in Visakhapatnam. They agree to share the looted money, but their plan goes awry when they encounter Darkdevil (Ajith Kumar), who is also there to rob the bank. He takes down a few goons and takes everyone else hostage. The main film reveals who Darkdevil is, why he planned to rob the bank, and who is helping him.
The film explores the common banking and stock market frauds prevalent in an economy and how they misuse public funds. It is relatable to the middle-class people who invest their hard-earned money in different investment avenues. The second half of the movie has entertaining scenes between the fraudsters and Ajith, providing a much-needed relief.
Ajith Kumar’s excellent screen presence and mannerisms steal the show, and Manju Warrier, Samuthirakani, and others are decent in their respective roles. However, the uneven screenplay tests the audience’s patience and lacks continuity, making the narrative move in a clueless manner. A few portions lack logic, and the action scenes towards the end are poorly executed. The emotional connection is also missing in the movie.
The BGM by Ghibran is decent, and the cinematography is fine, but the movie’s length could have been reduced. The director, H.Vinoth, has taken a good plot, but the film remains underwhelming due to the flawed screenplay. Although Thegimpu conveys a nice message, the flaws outweigh the positives and make it just an okay watch for the weekend.
